Me as a Reader

My name is Molly and I am in the 11th grade. I love to read and I’m always on the look out for a good book.

Books I love: Due to my reading habit, I have read and enjoyed many books. Such as, The Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling, You Only Get Letters From Jail, by Jodi Angel, The Devil All the Time and Knockemstiff by Donald Ray Pollock, Jesus’s Son by Denis Johnson, She’s Come Undone by Wally Lamb, Gods in Alabama by Joshulyn Jackson, and pretty much anything by Stephen King. These titles have made me cry both tears of sadness and joy, and they have made me shiver with fear and anticipation. The authors sucked me into their world, whether it was one full of wizards and magic or a trailer park in a small town in Kansas, and made me never want to finish the book. I have read these so many times I’ve lost count, and I recommend them for any one is search of a good read.

Books I hate: I hate any kind of romantic novels, especially Twilight by Stephanie Meyer and anything by Nicholas Sparks. These books are so cheesy and in my opinion, very tacky. Not only I couldn’t care less about the characters, but I feel as if the plots are just absolutely ridiculous. The story lines are so unrealistic, they make Harry Potter feel believable. I think these books are horribly written and the authors should just give up their career of writing before they embarrass themselves even more.

My least favorite character in all of literature: Defiantly Bella Swan from the Twilight series. I could go on for hours about how much this character bugs me, she’s clingy, needy, weak, feeble-minded, and in no way interesting, she’s not funny or smart, in fact, she is a very dull and boring person. She revolves her whole life on Edward, and even after he left her alone to die, she still chases after him like a little lost puppy dog, like really? She needed a life more than Amy Whinehouse needed rehab. I could not take Bella Swan seriously and had no respect for that character. There wasn’t a moment where I wanted her to either die or just completely change everything about her.

My favorite characters:I would have to say that some of my favorite characters are Hermione Granger (Harry Potter), Little Bee( Little Bee), Minny (The Help), but I also like the some of the “vilians” in stories, either because I think they are more interesting then the protagonists,or that the author had done such a good job of writing them, they are hard not too find interesting, despite what they do.

Favorite Reading Environments: I rarely have time to sit down and really enjoy a book, so when I do get that chance, I like it to be in peace so I can get lost in whatever I’m reading without any distractions. If it’s nice outside I’ll put on my sunglasses and read on my back patio while also getting a nice tan, I also like to read in rooms of my house where I can get away from distractions, such as my overweight dog running up to me and jumping in my lap and sitting his fat self right in between me and the book, crushing my internal organs in the process. In my room on my bed under a bunch of blankets with a cup of coffee or tea, iced or hot, is one of my favorite places to read. I enjoy the peace and quiet because it helps me get lost in the book amd let my imagination go with it.

Favorite Book From Last Year’s IRP: Hands down my favorite book from last year was “To Rise Again at a Decent Hour” by Joshua Ferris. The humor was dark and a little twisted, which is exactly my sense of humor and by the end of each chapter my sides hurt from laughing, and I’m not talking about the smile and little huff of air that you usually do when you see something funny on your phone then comment “LOL” I am talking about literally laughing out loud when I read this book. It takes place in modern times and the main character has an addiction to his smartphone, which is not only relatable to me, but also most people these days. This is one of my all times favorite  novels and I recommend it to anyone who might have a bit of a crude sense of humor.

List 10 Additional Things That You Learned About Yourself as a Reader from Last Year’s IRP:

1. I have an easier time talking about books then writing about them

2.If it’s a mystery novel I usually have it solved before I’ve even finished to book

3. I have a really wide range of genres that I like to read

4. I get very emotionally attached to fictional characters

5. If I’m really into a book I lose track of time and can spend up to hours reading

6. I can easily start and finish a book within a day

7. I like to put myself in the setting and see how I would deal with the same situation a character is going through

8. If the book is bad enough I WILL fall asleep while reading it and no matter how hard I try I can’t finish the book (this resulted in falling asleep outside in the sun with a book on my thighs and ending up with a strange tanline)

9. I like to pick out quotes from the books and apply them to things going on in my own life

10. Stephen King cannot write a likeable female character
